The Election Committee Needs You!
By B. Jo Branch, USGenWeb Election Committee Chair
Many who have served on the USGW Election Committee say it's the best committee they
have ever been on. They work hard and they play hard. In the process they learn a lot
about the project, past and present, the resources of particular states, and important
project issues. EC members share recipes and virtual treats, talk about pets and pet peeves,
fly paper airplanes, agree and agree to disagree. They cheer for each other's personal
triumphs and are there for each other during a crisis. They develop the kind of friendships
that blossom in a small group of people with similar interests and work. If you're a member
of the USGenWeb and want to learn more about it and do more to support it, consider
volunteering for this experience.
The Election Committee (EC) is looking for replacements to fill seats that are currently vacant or will
be vacant on 1 January 2008. Any member of the project who is eligible to vote can be a member of the EC
except for current members of the Advisory Board. Terms are for two years and people replacing others
serve for the remainder of that term vacated.
Each member works with State Coordinators and/or Assistant State Coordinators to maintain a current
membership list for the region or project for which they are responsible. The EC also helps individual
members who have questions about registration, voting, or other issues. Each EC member is responsible
for a group of states or for a group of special projects, but everyone is available to help each other
with questions.
The committee's busiest months are during the summer when it hosts the USGenWeb National Election.
During the last weeks before the election, the EC rechecks the membership list in order to ensure that
it's complete and that email addresses are up to date. Our goal is to see that as many members as possible
will be able to vote.
Now is your opportunity to apply. All you need to do is write to the current chair, Jo
Branch <bjcb@bellsouth.net>. State your full name, include the URL of your project(s) site, and add
anything you want to tell the committee. Volunteers are selected from those that apply and are approved
by the Advisory Board.
