IRC Chat Rooms

The USGenWeb Project has received approval to open chat rooms on the Rootsweb IRC server:

irc.rootsweb.ancestry.com

There are some very strict rules that must be followed when using these chat rooms.

  • The channels *must* be named USGenWeb - xxxx, as in
    • USGenWeb - Board
    • USGenWeb - Archives
    • USGenWeb - Census
  • There can be a channel called plain ol' USGenWeb for general chats or meetings.
  • These are not permanent channels with bots, but will activate whenever someone "/join" 's.
  • There is also permission to hold state-level meetings. The channel names for those meetings *must* be TXGenWeb, VAGenWeb, ARGenWeb, etc.
PLEASE NOTE: In order to use these Chat Rooms, you must have special IRC software installed on your computer. mIRC is easy to configure and to use. They offer great instructions on their web site for downloading, installing and configuring the program. Visit the mIRC site for more information. We have no connections with mIRC of any kind. Their program is just by far the most popular one out there. There are many others that you can try. Visit Download.com to search for other IRC programs that you might like to try.
